In 2019, Pioneer School, a valued returning client, asked us to transform unused space into an accessible forest school. The goal was to create an inclusive environment where students could connect with nature and engage in outdoor learning. We eagerly joined the planning process and launched phase one in the summer of 2020. This phase involved constructing an all-weather pathway that led to a safe and functional fire pit.
The pathway provided accessibility for all users, ensuring inclusivity, while the fire pit became a focal point for activities. Surrounding the stone circle, we added Tree Stump Stools and wooden seats, creating a welcoming, rustic seating area. At the heart of the fire pit, a durable dish rested securely within a brick enclosure, blending practicality with natural aesthetics.
Building on this success, phase two began later in 2020 with the creation of an Outdoor Classroom. Designed for year-round use, this 6m gazebo featured open sides to facilitate easy movement while providing shelter from sun and rain. The space offered a versatile area for teaching, group activities, and creative exploration.
In the summer of 2021, we completed phase three by adding a large, accessible pond, enhancing opportunities for hands-on learning about ecosystems and wildlife. The pond was designed to be self-cleaning and wildlife-friendly while prioritising safety to prevent accidents. Working closely with school staff, we developed an affordable solution that balanced function and aesthetics.
The pond featured a solar-powered pump and rock filtration system, ensuring sustainable water circulation. A fully lined area prevented leaks, while a trellis with double lockable gates secured the space. To create a tranquil atmosphere, water flowed over a slate centrepiece, producing soothing sounds that complemented the natural setting.
