Carley Knowles, Head of Early Years and KS1 at Pioneer Special School, approached us for help in redesigning their outdoor space to make it more user-friendly and exciting for all the students.
The garden, originally installed when the school was built, lacked functionality and didn’t provide an enjoyable environment. With a £45,000 budget, our goal was to create a space that was practical, stimulating, and inclusive. We envisioned a vibrant, wheelchair-friendly surface that encouraged outdoor play and learning for all abilities. The design also included a scooter track and shaded spots for all-weather play. Our team worked closely with teachers and SEN specialists to ensure the design met the diverse needs of students, including those with limited mobility.
One standout feature of the redesigned playground was the sensory pergola, quickly becoming a focal point. The pergola projects colourful patterns onto the ground, offering a visually engaging experience and a window to the sky. The vibrant surfacing added energy, while contrasting textures like wet pour and artificial grass provided a sensory experience. We also included interactive elements, such as tactile panels and sensory pathways, enhancing the play and learning environment.
When the children and staff returned, they were thrilled with the transformation. The playground has become a cherished space for both play and education. Teachers have noted it fosters imaginative play, promotes social interaction, and supports sensory exploration. It has become a valuable addition to the school’s daily routine.
“We are very pleased with the quality, service, and aftercare we received from your company regarding our play area rebuild. Stuart and the team were extremely helpful and professional, and the children and staff love the new play area.” – Steve Turner, Headteacher
