In early 2023, Oak Lodge Specialist Arts College, which caters to a diverse range of special educational needs, approached us to help transform their outdoor space. Their existing trim trail and surfacing were in poor condition, with layers of repairs creating trip hazards and posing safety concerns.

The school envisioned a peaceful area where students could walk, socialise, and relax. To achieve this, we proposed textured surfacing that offers a non-slip, tactile experience, allowing for a safer, more stimulating environment. The surfacing was designed to be wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all students could enjoy the space. Additionally, we incorporated natural-looking materials to create a more inviting and sensory-rich experience.

Alongside the surfacing, we included low-level planters, providing sensory stimulation through their plants and textures. This encouraged children to engage with nature and explore different textures and scents.

During our visit, we identified specific needs for some children, including the need for regular walking routes and Den Poles for sensory play. Furthermore, we designed a stage area with curved seating and a small mound to create an elevated space. This would offer added variety and engagement to the space.

The project spanned six weeks. Throughout this time, we removed ten large skips of old rubber surfacing. Subsequently, we replaced it with durable, all-weather surfacing, ensuring accessibility and resilience for heavy use. The newly transformed space now provides a tranquil environment for relaxation and socialising. It effectively meets sensory and mobility needs, creating a peaceful and engaging setting for both students and staff.
