In autumn 2021, we visited Langstone Junior Academy to assess their playground needs. Their much-loved Trim Trail, installed over fifteen years ago, had reached the end of its life due to rot and wear. Langstone school was eager for a replacement that offered more engaging challenges and fostered creative play.
The school requested a new Trim Trail, retaining some “like-for-like” elements while introducing opportunities for greater physical and imaginative development. Their vision focused on smooth play flow with easy transition between pieces, encouraging physical, social, and cognitive growth. The existing black wetpour surfacing, still in good condition but featuring colourful repair patches, was to be replicated in the new design to maintain consistency.
The Proposed Revamp
We proposed a revamped Trim Trail featuring ten new pieces, with the Bear Creek Play Tower Unit as the centrepiece. This dynamic three-tower structure brought fresh excitement to the playground, offering endless opportunities for exploration and active play. Key features of the Bear Creek include:
- A pull-up ramp and access net to build strength and coordination.
- Rope and rattle bridges for thrilling crossings and balance challenges.
- Rope weaver and traverse ropes to test agility and motor skills.
- Traverse climbing wall and climbing wall to develop confidence and climbing abilities.
- Access ladder and fireman’s pole for quick re-entry and fast-paced play.
The Bear Creek’s design promotes physical activity and imaginative play, making it a perfect focal point for the Trim Trail. Its multiple climbing elements, interactive features, and opportunities for creative exploration made it an instant hit with the students.
To ensure durability, all equipment was installed on steel feet, protecting the timber from ground rot and extending its lifespan. The entire project, including the removal of the old equipment, was completed in just over two weeks. Langstone Junior Academy now has a vibrant, action-packed play space that encourages children to climb, explore, and engage in imaginative play while developing essential physical and social skills.
