Holybourne is a small village near Alton, and at its northern end lies a large, well-loved play area. Surrounded by fields, this spot has been popular for many years. As some equipment was aging, the community launched a tender process to rejuvenate the space. The goal was to replace old favourites and add new equipment for younger children. Having visited the site often with our own families, we were familiar with the area and quickly began crafting a proposal for equipment that would complement the setting.

Our proposal featured a timber-clad shelter, open at the front and back, allowing clear visibility for neighbourhood watch. It also provided much-needed weather protection. We replaced the old trim trail with new elements that offered climbing, balancing, stretching, and hopping activities. The old toddler swing was updated with a double bay swing combining toddler seats and a “Jungle Swing.” This accessible swing allows multiple users to enjoy it. To add play value, we introduced “The Clandon,” featuring easy access steps, a pull-up ramp, and an astellated bridge. It also included a fire pole, rattle bridge, and stainless steel slide.

To blend with the natural setting, we chose rubber grass mat surfacing. Grass grows through the mats, creating an impact-absorbing surface. This design allows for normal mowing. All equipment was installed on steel feet, protecting it from ground rot and strimmer damage. The steel feet also make future maintenance easier and more cost-effective.

The play area is more popular than ever, now that it has equipment for all ages and shelter from the elements. There is also a large amount of open space, still within the enclosed area, providing a great space for ball games and allowing small children some independence. It’s the perfect location for picnics and enjoying summer afternoons.
