After a recommendation from a previous client, we were approached by Hockley Primary School in Essex. They came to us needing assistance with their playground redevelopment project.
The school had a budget of £70,000 + VAT to transform two areas of their playground, each with a different purpose. Originally, the playground was one large space with sections for adventure play, performance, and traditional playground games with line markings.
The school envisioned, over two phases, creating two distinct areas on the outskirts of the playground: one for adventure play and the other for quiet, reflective, and relaxed play.
Phase 1 was the top priority, focusing on the quiet play area.
Previously, this corner of the playground was dedicated to performances, with a stage and seating for children who wanted a break from the busy playground. However, the equipment and surfacing had deteriorated and required extensive repairs. Rather than patch it up, the school decided to completely revamp the space.
The new quiet play area needed three key features: all-weather surfacing (apple green wet pour), an inclusive shelter, and a perimeter fence. These elements were essential to create a calming, safe, and reflective environment.
Our proposal included a 5m gazebo with internal decking, perimeter bench seating, and an inclusive access ramp. We also installed the bright apple green wet pour and a picket fence around the area. This created a visual and physical barrier, protecting the space from stray footballs and tennis balls from the main playground.
The first phase was completed in just two weeks and was ready for the children’s return after the Easter holidays!
