In early 2022, the National Trust reached out to us about upgrading the play area at Grey’s Court, Henley-on-Thames. The existing equipment had deteriorated due to rot and no longer complied with safety standards, necessitating a complete replacement. Situated within a woodland with a steep gradient and numerous Ash trees, the site presented unique challenges.

The client sought natural-looking equipment that would seamlessly integrate into the wooded surroundings. We recommended The Hawthorn, a thoughtfully designed single-tower play unit that perfectly met their needs. This compact structure features extended posts and angled timbers that mimic tree branches. While green HDPE panels engraved with leaf patterns further enhance its connection to nature. Its stainless steel slide and vibrant, engraved graphics ensure a durable, engaging play experience that blends beautifully into the woodland setting.

Our proposal was approved in March 2022, and we quickly moved forward with the technical drawings and manufacturing process. Given the site’s steep gradient, we incorporated a longer slide to maximise the play value and make full use of the natural landscape. This customisation not only enhanced the unit’s functionality but also ensured it fit perfectly within the terrain.

The Hawthorn was installed in May 2022, transforming the space into an inviting and safe play area for children. Its sturdy construction and imaginative design have made it a standout feature at Grey’s Court. Encouraging children to explore, climb, and play together while connecting with their natural surroundings.

Since the installation, we have revisited the site to explore opportunities for extending the play area and introducing additional features. The success of The Hawthorn at Grey’s Court demonstrates how thoughtful design and customisation can create a play environment that enriches the outdoor experience while complementing the beauty of its surroundings.
