At the end of 2021, a pre-school in Layer, Essex, contacted us. They had a large pre-school setting with a small outdoor play area. Unfortunately, their existing play equipment was old and had little play value for the children.
The pre-school leaders wanted one of our Buccaneer Pirate Ships. However, it wouldn’t fit in the play area’s limited space. We discussed the project with our design team and created a bespoke pirate boat. The boat was designed for early years and fit perfectly in the available space.
This is The Layer Fortune, designed for children up to 6 years old. Despite its compact size, this pirate-themed play boat is packed with engaging features to spark imaginative adventures and support active play. Key elements include easy access stairs, a pull-up rope ramp, a slide, and a V-rope bridge, all of which help children develop gross motor skills such as climbing, balancing, and coordination.
Additional features like porthole domes, nautical embellishments, and under-deck dens inspire creative storytelling and role-playing, encouraging social interaction and teamwork. The skull and crossbones flag adds the finishing touch, making this play unit truly immersive for little buccaneers.
The active play benefits of this equipment are numerous. Children build strength and confidence as they navigate the various climbing and balancing elements. At the same time, the play boat promotes problem-solving and spatial awareness, making it a holistic tool for physical and cognitive development.
When the children returned from their half-term break, they were thrilled to discover The Layer Fortune waiting for them—a highlight of their play area and a catalyst for endless pirate-themed adventures!
